    Overflow Duct

Our Overflow duct is a critical filtration component for dredging systems, designed to separate slurry and excess water efficiently. Made of corrosion-resistant marine-grade materials, it maintains stable pressure and prevents clogging during dredging operations. Compliant with industry standards, it boosts the overall efficiency of sand, sediment, and slurry processing for port and coastal projects.

Yanyang Marine overflow duct

Our Overflow Duct is a core overflow control component widely used in Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHD) and Split Hopper Barges.

Yanyang Marine’s dredge overflow systems are engineered for all sizes of trailing suction hopper dredgers.

They are hydraulically operated, and their operation can be fully integrated into the automatic Dredging control system as required.

We design each dredge overflow system to optimize dredging process efficiency by ensuring maximum solids retention. Dredge overflow safely drains excess process water overboard; an effective system minimizes turbulence, allowing the slurry mixture maximum settling time.

All overflow systems are custom-engineered to the specific needs of individual vessels, and a high-performance overflow system can significantly boost net production.

A standard dredge overflow system consists of a fixed outer section and a sliding inner section, both tubular.

The top of the moving section is fitted with a conical or rectangular weir, designed to create non-turbulent, uniform flow to enhance sediment settling. The moving section is raised or lowered via a Hydraulic Cylinder mounted to the fixed outer section.

A mechanical or electro-mechanical position indicator can be installed upon request. The travel range of the moving section matches the required minimum and maximum overflow levels, and the stroke can be extended with a telescopic three-part overflow design.

Applicable Vessels & Hopper Capacities

Our Overflow Duct is suitable for Dredging Vessels with hopper capacities ranging from 500 m³ to 30,000 m³ for Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers, and 500 m³ to 5,000 m³ for Split Hopper Barges, fully covering small coastal barges, medium engineering vessels, and large ocean-going dredgers.

Applications:

The Overflow Duct is mainly used on dredging vessels for port construction, Waterway Dredging, sand mining, land Reclamation, channel maintenance and coastal engineering projects. It stably controls the slurry level inside the hopper, discharges excess water smoothly with low turbulence, improves solid retention and slurry concentration, prevents overfilling and overflow accidents, and greatly enhances construction efficiency and operational safety.

It can be fully integrated with the ship’s automatic dredging control system and is widely used for newbuilding, retrofitting and equipment replacement of various hopper dredgers and split hopper barges worldwide.

Full Customized Service

Yanyang Marine provides custom design, manufacturing, duplication, installation, commissioning and full-process one-stop services to meet different vessel sizes, layout requirements and working conditions, ensuring reliable performance, long service life and seamless integration with on-board systems.

Science Popularization

Overflow System

To maximize the loading capacity of a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, an overflow operation is employed to discharge low-concentration slurry. The overflow device, also known as the Overflow Cylinder, is typically installed on the port and starboard sides of the hopper or at the bow and stern bulkheads.

Mechanically, the system consists of a steel inner cylinder featuring a weir (bell-mouth), which moves vertically within a fixed outer steel cylinder driven by a hydraulic system. The outer cylinder connects directly to the sea chest (hull bottom), with seals installed between the inner and outer cylinders to ensure watertightness.

The vertical position of the inner cylinder dictates the liquid level within the hopper, thereby controlling the loading capacity. Since the excess slurry is discharged below the waterline, this system significantly minimizes the environmental impact on the construction waters.
